Our Overview

This tour covers the full chronological history of the island of Vis — from the beginnings of civilization to the present day. You’ll be introduced to the early beginnings of life on Vis, shaped by the Illyrians, Greeks (from 397 BC), and Romans. We’ll guide you through the island’s history under Byzantine, Venetian, Napoleonic, British, and Austro-Hungarian rule, helping you discover why Vis was such a strategically important destination throughout the centuries.
In addition to historical events, you’ll gain insight into the island’s economic, demographic, and political landscape across different periods.
Driving through the island’s interior on a scenic road built by the Austro-Hungarian army, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Vis town, Komiža, and numerous vineyards surrounding hilltop villages nestled in the island’s heart.
One of the highlights is a visit to the former British military airfield — a significant site from World War II. Although the airstrip is no longer in use, it remains in its original condition, just as it was in the 1940s when it served as an Allied air base.
We’ll then ascend to Hum, the island’s highest peak at 587 meters above sea level, offering a stunning panoramic view of Komiža Bay and the surrounding Central Dalmatian islands. On clear days, you may even spot the Italian coastline, approximately 70 nautical miles away. Near the island’s highest peak lies Tito’s Cave, which served as a hideout for Josip Broz Tito (Marshal of the Partisan Army) during World War II, protecting him from German attacks. You’ll have the opportunity to visit this historic site as part of the tour.
The tour continues through charming local villages on the island’s southwest side before descending into Komiža. This beautiful coastal town, home to around 900 residents, boasts a rich history rooted in fishing and the fishing industry.
After a walk through Komiža, we drive back to Vis along a road built by the Yugoslav army in the 1980s. The tour concludes with a wine tasting experience at our family winery, which has been producing wine since 1921.

Everything You Need to Know

Grapevines have been grown on Vis since the 4th century BC. According to legend, the ancient Greeks chose vineyard locations by watching how the morning dew slid down the vine leaves. If the droplet fell from the “right side” of the leaf – the soil was perfect. Today, that technique is known as… instinct and tradition.
